John’s compass must be broken.
When the survivor’s split into two groups during the fourth season, Locke’s group leaves from the cockpit section of the plane and heads for the Barracks, while Jack’s group heads back to the beach.
Now, here’s where things get weird. Sawyer asks Locke why the group is headed east and adds, “I thought you said the Barracks are south of here.” The evidence suggests that the cockpit crashed in the southern area of The Island, and the Barracks are located to the north.
But it doesn’t end there. Later, after Locke finds the Horace’s map to Jacob’s cabin at the DHARMA mass grave, he tells Hurley that he can return to the beach if he heads north. We know that the beach camp is on the southern shore of The Island.
So once again, we must disregard two instances of character dialogue in order for the map to make any sense. Thankfully, these little discrepancies don’t detract from the overall story of LOST, but a little attention to detail on the part of the writers would make the show that much better, in my opinion.
